Tummy time is one of those things every parent hears about from day one. It strengthens your baby's neck, shoulders, and core muscles, and it's essential for healthy development. But when your baby has a g-tube, tummy time can feel intimidating — or even impossible.
As a former EMT, caregiver, and the maker behind Lil' Bayou Boutique, I've thought a lot about how to make tummy time safer and more comfortable for tube-fed babies. Here's what I've learned.
Why Tummy Time Matters for G-Tube Babies
Babies with g-tubes often spend more time on their backs — during feeds, recovery, and medical appointments. This makes tummy time even more important for building the muscle strength they need to reach developmental milestones like rolling, sitting, and crawling.
The challenge is that lying flat on their stomach puts direct pressure on the g-tube site, which can be uncomfortable, irritating, or even risky if the tube gets bumped or pulled.
Tips for Safe, Comfortable Tummy Time
1. Use a G-Tube Tummy Time Pillow
This is the tip that started it all for me — and why I invented the G-Tube Tummy Time Pillow. It's a specially shaped pillow designed with a cutout and raised area that keeps pressure off the g-tube site while your baby lies on their tummy. It's a game-changer for tube-fed families.
2. Start Short and Sweet
Even just 2-3 minutes of tummy time several times a day adds up. You don't need long sessions — consistency matters more than duration, especially when you're working around feeding schedules and tube care.
3. Time It Right
Avoid tummy time right after a feed, when your baby's belly is full and the g-tube site may be more sensitive. Wait at least 30-60 minutes after a feeding for the most comfortable experience.
4. Get on Their Level
Lie down face-to-face with your baby during tummy time. Your presence and eye contact are motivating — and it makes the whole experience more fun for both of you.
5. Use a Rolled Towel or Wedge
If your baby is still getting used to tummy time, a small rolled towel placed under their chest (avoiding the g-tube site) can provide extra support and make the position more comfortable.
6. Watch for Tube Positioning
Before each tummy time session, check that the g-tube button is secure and the extension tube (if connected) is tucked safely out of the way. A g-tube belt can help keep everything in place during active time.
7. Follow Your Baby's Lead
Every baby is different, and every g-tube journey is unique. If your baby is fussing or showing signs of discomfort, it's okay to stop and try again later. Talk to your pediatrician or GI team if you have concerns about tummy time positioning for your specific child.
You've Got This
Parenting a child with a g-tube takes creativity, patience, and a whole lot of love. Tummy time is just one more thing you'll figure out — and with the right tools and support, it can become a sweet part of your daily routine.
